Artist Of The Week : Deer Anna

Deer Anna is a young Hamburg artist who made her first public performances in 2019 in Lübeck to test the resonance before trying to get established in the Hamburg club circuit. The idea was not bad but the pandemic and the ensuing lock-down simply messed up that approach. There was not much to be heard from her during 2020, a fate that struck all new and young artists trying to make it into the so important music scene in Hamburg at the time. She teamed up with BIMM, The British and Irish Modern Music Institute, during 2020 and they produced a video of her song Dawn taken on a boat on the Elbe in Hamburg that summer and released on youtube in February of 2021. It is worth a view if not for the great song then at least for the nice views of Hamburg and the harbour.

She worked at new songs all through 2021, signed up to a new management, DanCan, and in August 2021 made an official release of Dawn followed quickly by her second single, In The Clouds, released in October 2021.

Her newest single release in January, Flowers On Your Floor, was followed by the release of her first EP, Have I Ever Been Asleep, on BandCamp on the 18th February this year. The EP contains the three singles released to date as well as two further titles, Marks and St. Patrick‘s Cathedral.

At a time when there only a few interesting new entries in the Hamburg music scene who are not following the current trend to electronics and hip-hop Deer Anna provides a convincing mix of electric guitar and handmade folk that does not shout for attention. Her at times husky voice creates a wistful atmosphere that carries the listener off with the music into realms of melancholy without ever getting soppy, jaded or fake.

A really exciting new entry to the Hamburg scene and I am sure that we will be hearing a lot more from her in future. Her EP, Have I Ever Been Asleep, is, of course, available for you all to listen to on my music server at mymusic.ddnss.de so do give it a spin, you will love it.
